Mrs. Winchell’s Class News- May 25, 2015
Reading/Literacy
The students have been practicing responding to text in their reading response journals during their reading workboard time. In preparation for third grade, they are working on writing complete sentences and checking their responses for capitalization and punctuation. We are also continuing our study of poetry during both our reading and writing time.
Our word study principle this week was: some words change their spelling when changed to the plural form. For example, the plural form of child is children.
Math
We finished chapter 9 at the end of the week and will be taking the end of the chapter assessment on Tuesday. Chapter 10 focuses on collecting data and showing results in different types of graph models.
Many students are reaching 100% fluency in addition and subtraction and are moving on to multiplication and division in Reflexmath.com Congratulations! Mastering multiplication and division will give them a great head start for 3rd grade. Some children have also begun working on some math concepts on IXL.com. Your child can work on this at home also. Their username is their first initial and last name @gcsd.com. The password is the same 5 digit password they use for reflexmath.com.
Social Studies
This week, we talked a lot about the reason we celebrate Memorial Day. We shared a book that explained why and when the holiday was created and different ways people around the country celebrate. We also shared personal connections of people we knew who have died in a war. The students wrote thank you letters to a veteran who is being honored in Washington D.C. this coming week.
Science
All of the butterflies emerged from their chrysalises. The children really enjoyed observing their color patterns and watching them use their proboscis to sip nectar from flowers and cantaloupe. We released the butterflies on Thursday afternoon. I will be posting pictures of their release on the class website so be sure to check them out. We are also working on some butterfly crafts that represent different stages of the butterfly life cycle.
